Natural Hair Dictionary

Okay so by now I’m sure you would have scoured over many blogs, vlogs and natural hair pages. You may have come across some abbreviations which left you thinking ‘Waarrrrrrtttt??!’. LOL. No worries, I was exactly the same! Here are some commonly used abbreviations in natural Hair speak and their meanings:

APL: Arm Pit length

BC – Big Chop

BSB: Below Shoulder Blade

BSL: Bra Strap length

Co-Wash – washing hair with just conditioner

DC – Deep condition/er

EL: Ear length

EO – Essential oils: These are naturally existing oils i.e. peppermint, lavender etc.

MBL: Mid Back Length

NL: Neck length

Pre-poo – Treating your hair in some way to reduce dryness experienced using shampoos.

Protective hairstyle – a hairstyle that protects the ends of your hair from breakage.

SL: Shoulder length

TWA – Teen Weeny Afro

Transitioning – The period where you are growing your hair natural but still haven’t cut out the relaxed parts.
