Comment on Do you find that after you take out your protective hairstyle, you get dry breakage? Because I do, so now I’m a bit hesitant in doing braids again. by Ruz

I found that I used to get a lot of dry breakage, so much so that I thought that it was a normality for my hair texture and that I was just going to have to bear it.

However, my current regime has significantly reduced the amount of breakage I get.
Here are a few 'prevention'' tips:

Water - your hair needs water, your hair loves water - it provides moisture and stops hair becoming brittle. Get yourself a spray bottle and spritz your hair daily.

Leave-in conditioner - for dry hair, conditioners are vital in keeping it soft, moisturised and strong. Make sure you check the ingredients before you buy. You should be aiming for conditioner with as many natural ingredients as possible. Giovanni Weightless Moisture Direct Leave-in is great.

Seal - seal in this moisture with natural butters such as shea butter. You should also have a few oils that improve and condition your hair e.g. coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil

Whilst your hair is in protective styles, it is essential that you continue to moisturise it so that your hair doesn't become brittle because of neglect. My final tip is: do not overmanipulate your hair, handle with care - excess brushing and touching = breakage. Resist the urge - because of these tips your hair should start to feel softer and more moisturised but after detangling and styling keep your hands out of your hair (otherwise you might find broken hairs all over your hands). Look dont touch.

Peace ^_^

Yup yup missy i agree. Also i think length needs to be taken into acount as well. Hair grows if you look after it well, so if people are freaked out by the idea of having a twa for life- that wont happen unless you want it to. And tho the twa is the most enlightening period of time for many new naturals, there is a way of cutting out this step altogether- simply by transitioning for longer. Looking after hair, as mentioned earlier, is another vital point and so think of it this way: if you have a weave and you dont brush it or add oil to it, it will look a hot mess and nobody is gnna have respect for that hair because of the fact that you don't have respect for it either. The same applies for natural hair, if you don't look after it- you're gnna be dissed, if you do look after it- you're gnna both be envied and complemented. MY last but most important point is confidence. If you don't have confidence that your hair suits you, everybody else will pick up on those vibes and start telling you that natural hair doesn't suit you. Whereas if you like your hair and let people know bluntly (without long explanations), people have no choice but to like it too! ^_^

Kinky Twist are definitely a style worth trying if you are natural and need a break, but they are also good if you are trying to become natural. This style is what aided me in my unintended journey. :-)

Oooo nicole that's great advice there. Yes Ghana braids is definitely not a long term hairstyle for thicker coarse hair textures.
The styling foam tip sounds gr8. Will have to put that into action urself!
Thanks ;)

es of course I do it all the time ( well not all the time but I do it). Sometimes the hairdressers like to straighten the hair because it will look smoother and last looker.
However if you get one that knows really how to braid hair it's not a problem, and also your hair line will not reside because they will have a good hand,( you know there are some hairdresser that no matter what they do, even if it was cornrow to grow your hair, it will break it).
But for one that has soft hairline or none at all I do not recommend this style at all, may look good (if no hairline I doubt it) but think bout the long term damage, its just like shoes.
Also if you have thick and coarse natural hair, big size ghana I don't recommend, UNLESS your hair is substantially long. Otherwise it most times will not come out smooth or last 2 weeks, (normal length of time I keep mine, even as relaxed).
Before I forget, STYLING FOAM, to preserve the hair use it when or before it starts getting rough. You apply a substantial amount all over the hair, wrap it with silk cloth of something, then blow dry UNTIL dry.
