Hmmm what hairstyle to do ?!!

September 21, 2011 in My journey, Special Ocassions

Hey ladies (and perhaps gentlemen)!

I thought I’d share the events that took place (or more precisely thought processes!) when deciding what hairstyle I’d do for my birthday.

So for my 21st bday I had a nice little up do planned which I stumbled across on YouTube (video to be posted soon!) but then I change my mind and thought hmmm maybe I’ll just do an afropuff. My friends and I admittedly thought this was BORING! So I changed my mind again…and then I saw another hairstyle (by MsVaughnTV – YouTube) I wanted to do:

20110921-171513.jpg

… But then I changed my mind back to the original hairstyle.

So the Saturday night before ‘D-day’, my friend and I started the prep. Long story short, it all went horribly wrong :’( My hair just wasn’t doing what I wanted it to.

So I restyled….
… Then restyled again

[1:40am or around so]

I was about to burst into tears (a slight exaggeration, it was more of a hissy fit tbh) and a thought came to me [lightbulb moment!]:

If you’re not succeeding with all these hair styles (and I couldn’t persist as I had church in a few hours – I needed to do something sensible with my hair!), why not just do what you do best – keep it simple. So I did! Stuck with my afropuff and learnt a lesson:

Don’t be afraid to keep it simple – sometimes it screams louder than extravagance :)

Encouragement to you ladies: if you’re looking for a hairstyle for a special event, there are loads around and YouTube offers a great range but sometimes, what you may find is the simple, everyday hairstyle may just do the trick ;)

Oh and some pics :D

Feel free to share your own experiences too!! Don’t forget to

A funny mishap after my BC

August 25, 2011 in My journey

Okay so I was at work today just reminiscing and I remembered this funny moment and thought I’d share it with all you beautiful naturals out there.

So after IBCd I decided I’d get my friend to straighten my hair for church the next day. By then I had no clue about how to maintain natural hair, I simply thought I’d be straightening it out every week or so. Anyway, so she straightened my hair out that Saturday night. I took care to wrap it as I usually would with my relaxed hair.

Sunday morning I woke up and took out my hair, ready to style it. What did I find? A hot mess! My hair had reverted back to an afro, except my roots forgot to let my tips know so my tips were still straight! LOL. I think back and I can’t help laughing. Honestly, I looked like I’d been electrocuted!!! I did my best to style it out but …er well… It probably wasnt the most successful of attempts. My first lesson in my natural hair journey.

Of course I couldn’t reminisce without leaving you all with a visual aid. Take a look lol

Have any of you experienced this? Do post any funny stories you have of your experiences and don’t forget…

“I Don’t Think Natural Hair Suits Me”

August 7, 2011 in My journey

Quick post on this one ladies and I’m sure you’ve come across it before. One reason I get a lot for why a lotta ladies are scared to go natural: they think it won’t suit them. I always have a check in my mind when someone says this because I always think: but God doesn’t make mistakes. I think rather it’s the hair style you wear that may not suit you. It’s a bit similar getting a weave with middle parting – not necessarily for everyone but that doesn’t mean weave in itself should be put out of the picture.

Here’s the deal ladies:

Your natural hair is God given and it is beautiful! What you (or we I guess) need to do is learn to appreciate it and how to take care of it. Find styles that suit you – but you’ll never know until you try :D

What are your thoughts and views guys

An Old Post From Last Year: Insecurity issue No 2: My Hair

July 20, 2011 in My journey

So I stumbled across an old post I wrote around this time last year, when I had done  my BC – this brought back soooo many memories! I realised I’ve come a long way from then. I just feel it’s so raw and real so I’m posting it as an encouragement – some of you may be going through this now so I hope it’s beneficial :)

Insecurity issue No 2: My Hair

So I’ve just taken out my hair from my lace wig and left it natural. I started 9 months ago on this journey because the relaxer was killing my hair so I decided to go natural. I cut off all the relaxed hair about 3 months ago and continued using my lace wig. I was quite shocked when I took it out to find my hair had actually come a long way. So I decided to keep the lace wig to the side and leave out my natural hair – which I thought was beautiful not because my hair was perfect but simply because I didn’t even know what my natural hair looked like any more and I just liked the fact that this is actually my hair unprocessed, raw: natural. I also think it’s really nice and fluffy :)

So what then is my point? My point is this: I left home confident and happy even though I knew people would be surprised. I went out, went to church etc. Yet the longer I remained outside, it became very clear that not only were people surprised – it was not a very pleasant surprise for them. My deep found joy (which I guess was not so deep as it was soon overcome with immense conscientiousness and insecurity) was soon destroyed with looks, laughs and comments such as ‘why did you take off your lovely hair’ ‘you need to relax your hair…(I’m growing it out natural) … Oh (with a bewildered and somewhat disappointed look)’ and even the dreaded ‘I get the look you were trying to go for’ ouch that one hurt!

You know its silly because I really really really shouldn’t care what others think as long as I’m happy. My happiness certainly should not be dependent on the reactions of others. Nevertheless, I returned home a dejected girl.

Oh of course I did get a few (err very few) ‘oh wow your hair looks nice’ but that was certainly drowned by the uproars of discord which eventually swallowed me. The day I started blissfully very soon became overshadowed with this deep hurt. I was … Am hurt. Of course I then went back to ‘oh now boys won’t like me or think I’m attractive’. Stupid, ungodly and immature as it is – unfortunately it went through my mind.

It’s as if I was no longer socially acceptable because of the simple fact of my hair. Disappointing…and disappointed.

The thought arises to me then: why?

I’ve never been one for extensions etc. (although there was a stage in early secondary school where I had to have braids – which I must add when people see it today think I had dreadlocks LOL) but when I decided to grow my hair natural I knew I’d have to.

It was like I took on a whole new personality…character. This girl was mature, confident…and had “good” hair. Now that’s all done away with what’s left is the insecure, young girl who doesn’t have good hair. But wait! I’m still me!! Nothing has changed I’m still me: laughing, crying, smiling – I just have my hair natural…and short. That’s all.

So what’s the big deal? It’s this: society has conformed us to an image that is not necessarily accurate. It seems as though if you don’t have long flowing hair or if your short hair is not relaxed then …err ewwww. Most afro-Caribbean girls have afro-kinky hair. Yet most Afro-Caribbean girls either have some form of extensions or relax their hair. It’s not bad, its not a sin. A lot of us do so that our hair is manageable (as we have been raised to believe). However unfortunately, most of us including the latter category have taken on another persona. So its like there is no me without this hair. Now that is a problem. It’s best exemplified when in between times of getting our hair done, we dread, we fret, we hide our hair the best way possible in shame because its in a state, we think, is unacceptable.

My question is this: without the processed hair or extensions, make up, earrings: who are you?

I’d made up my mind when God showed me I was insecure to beautify the inside of me as well as my outward form in its natural state – without make up, earrings etc. I want to perfect my natural beauty so that in the off chance all is stripped away it will be a ‘wow’ and not ‘oh my goodness…what happened’ That which is external fades away, but the inner beauty only stands to increase with time. I don’t want to be bound to those things (adornment) whereby I feel that I have no identity without them.

Then what do I do? Relax my hair again (which I hate to do) or hide under my extensions? Of course not! I’m gonna battle this out – Daddy didn’t raise no quitter! I refuse to conform to the superficial mindsets and precepts of this society.

So then with tears welling up but held back I close: The Lord has many things to teach me about me and I have yet to learn them. I’ve got a lot of growing up to do.  - I’m certainly not as strong as I would have liked to think.

I just pray God will break me and as the clay in the potters hands, mould me. That He will give me humility in its fullness to learn. For you (the reader) may God reveal all the beauty that has been placed in you. Anything holding you bound, may you be released from it and set free in the knowledge of the truth about God and yourself. Amen.

**THE END**

I’m happy to say of course, just over one year later, I’m definely no longer insecure about my natural hair – I love it! I take care of it accordingly now and take immense pride in my luscious kinks and curls :) You should too ;)

Protective Hairstyle #3

June 22, 2011 in Hair care, Hair Styles, My journey, Protective, Reviews

So a fashion must do at the moment is….

……Turbans XD

Here are some DIY pics…

Scarves: H & M £6-£7 (definitely worth it!)

I’ve definitely jumped on the bandwagon here! This is a fabulous way to keep your hair from breakage etc. by minimal manipulation of your hair especially if like me, you’re tired of weave/braids/twists etc. It’s my protective hairstyle as well as my can’t be bothered to do anything to my hair today hairstyle. Come uni and exam period, this is where it’s at!!

Here are some vlogs that show you how to achieve this and other turban looks:

Natural Chica aka NikkiMae2003

Naturalbelle

What do you guys think about turbans right about now? What other shops do you suggest to get these scarves from?

Protective Hairstyle #2

June 21, 2011 in Hair care, Hair Styles, My journey, Protective

So for protective hairstyle No2 we have

……Kinky twists!!

Hair – Kinky twists
Colour – 4

Ratings:

  • Look – 5
  • Maintenance – 5
  • Longevity – 5
  • Results – 5
  • AVERAGE –  5

I did this from December 10 to May 11 twice and I have to say guys, I absolutely LOVE this one. Definitely recommend it to everyone!! Why?

Because….

It’s

  • simple
  • easy to maintain – just oil your scalp once a week and you can use dry shampoo every 2 weeks to clean your scalp
  • lasts for a long time (mine I wore for 2 – 3months and I did it twice)
  • similar texture to my hair so didn’t look too rough with the regrowth

When I took it out my hair had grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrroooooowwwwwwnnn!! See the difference before (November 10) and after (March and May 11):

I think you’ll agree there’s a significant difference here in just under 6 months!! If you’re looking for a good protective hairstyle, look no further!!

What do you think guys?  Have any of you tried this before? Rate, Comment and Subscribe :D

Protective Hairstyle #1

June 20, 2011 in Hair care, Hair Styles, My journey, Protective

The first protective hairstyle I went for was just before uni because my hair was verrrrryyy dry and I still was trying to get the hand of taking care of it.

I did a wig cap:

Hair – Premium Now 1x 8 inches and 1 x 23/27 set with fringe
Colour – 4

Ratings:

  • Look – 3
  • Maintenance – 5
  • Longevity – 3
  • Results – 0
  • AVERAGE –  2.75

The pros about this hair style is that it was simple. I didn’t need to much apart from style it  or run my fingers through it so my hair wasn’t being strained etc. (hence a high score for maintenance). HOWEVER I took this off after like three days and when I put it back on it wasn’t the same. It felt so insecure on my head so I took it off after only 2/3 weeks and I paid £60 (including the hair) for it. I was majorly upset and so I highly doubt I’ll ever do this again!

Have any of you tried wig caps? How did you find it?

Recommended hair products

June 20, 2011 in Hair care, My journey

I’ve been asked quite a few times what I actually do to my hair i.e. what I use / how do I make it soft etc. So here are my recommended MUST have products (this is everything I use!)

VO5 Herbal escapes shampoo

Can’t stop talking about this VO5 range because not only does it do it’s job, it also smells gorgeous and get this: It costs JUST £1!!! (I purchase mine form Paks in Peckham but I believe you can get it online for a slightly higher price and I mean by about 20p or so!).

VO5 Herbal escapes Conditioner

Once again this smells beautiful and I love the texture of it. It feels so silky on my hair like it’s actually doing the conditioning and not just a bottle of water! this once again is also £1 :)

Organic root stimulator hair mayonnaise

AMAZING stuff right here. What I love about this is that it cost just under £5 (Paks, Peckham) and it’s so thick that you use very little of it each time. Whenever I wash my hair out, this product leave it feeling so soft and silky! For more information on my deep conditioning technique see: How I deep condition my hair.

Cantu shea butter leave in conditioning repair cream

This has to be one of my best buys honestly (purchased from Paks in Peckham). I use this both as a leave in as well as an everyday moisturiser. It leaves my hair feeling super soft and smells DELICIOUS too! The only thing is that because it is water based, it does tend to cause a bit of shrinkage which at this stage is annoying :(

 Organics olive oil cream therapy

Honestly, I haven’t used this product that much simply because I’m still trying to get the balance between using the Cantu and my oils. This is also a lovely find. Although it is water based too, I haven’t found it to bring about as much shrinkage as the Cantu. It really penetrates the hair and leaves it feeling very creamy which is good because my hair feels very well moisturised and soft. Once again I purchased this from Paks, Peckham.

Tangle Teezer Brush

I purchased this from Boots (that’s the only shop it’s available from unless you buy it online) and it’s absolutely FAH-BYU-LOUS! I love this brush so much. It’ll set you back about £10 but well worth it. I find it so much better than a Denman’s brush. I use it to detangle and just brush my hair daily. It really does what it says: it detangles brilliantly leaving my hair feeling soft :)

I also have the compact one (about £12) which I use on the go because that has a cover to protect the bristles and it’s more well…compact lol.

Wide toothed, round edged plastic comb

This was about £1 from boots. It’s simple and easy to use and since it’s edges are rounded, it doesn’t tear or split your hair, leaving it protected and therefore evading breakage.

Afro Comb

Honestly I don’t actually use afro combs much. I never used this much for my TWA either. However, I take it in my bag on the go just in case I need to even out my fro (if that’s the style I’m wearing). Once again, I purchased this from boots for about £1.

So that’s it – everything I use on my hair! These work for me, they may not necessarily work for you but you can only try and see. I had to try soooo many products before I found my staple products (products I use daily). Now I’m happy :) What do you guys think? Have any of you tried any of these? What are your thoughts?

Leave comments and suggestions and also rate this post (at the top) so I get an idea of how useful it is!

How I deep condition my hair

June 20, 2011 in Hair care, My journey

Quick post on how I deep condition my hair:

Before deep conditioning I will either cowash or wash with shampoo so I

  1. Part hair into 4 sections
  2. Tie each section with a hair band (without metal part)
  3. Wash each section
  4. Tie each section each time

Then on to deep conditioning

  1. Untie one section of hair
  2. Part bit by bit i.e. into 3 further sections
  3. Apply organic hair stimulator hair mayonnaise
  4. Detangle with Tangle Teezer
  5. twist each mini section
  6. Repeat until whole head is done
  7. Wrap head with cling film
  8. Cover with a towel
  9. Wait for at least 2 hours / leave overnight
  10. Take out and wash each twist one by one

As I take out and wash each twist, I also apply the cantu shea butter leave in and my oils (castor and coconut) then plait my hair too. Then I can leave that overnight to dry and take it out in the morning. By this time my hair would have dried and be stretched out. so I moisturise (with cantu and oils) and brush / style and voila!

…and here come the pics! :D
